Some films and TV featuring (to a greater or lesser degree) the world of books
Black Books (2000, 2002, 2004)
TV comedy with Bill Bailey, Tamsin Greig, and Dylan Moran. Set in a bookshop. Best episodes: Cooking the Books (series 1); The Entertainer (series 2); and Elephants and Hens (series 3 – about the writing of a children’s book).
Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001)
Renee Zellweger is assistant in London publisher’s office (also stars Hugh Grant and Colin Firth).
A feature-length independent film about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which celebrated its 50th birthday in 2007) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives.
The Holiday (2006)
Romcom which features Jude Law as a London book editor (also stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet).
Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)
Woody Allen as mild-mannered publisher in this comic murder story (also stars Diane Keaton).
The Proposal (2009)
Romcom with Sandra Bullock as book editor.
Directed by Billy Wilder, the film stars Tom Ewell as a Manhattan publisher of cheap pocket books who finds that Marilyn Monroe has moved in upstairs. It features the famous scene where Monroe, wearing a white dress, walks over a subway grating and her dress billows skywards.
